The Highland Capital Inverness is only approximately 25 minutes drive away. The official website provides details of places to visit and things to do.

 

The historic town of Beauly is within 15 minutes drive and has several traditional shops such as a butcher, baker and greengrocer as well as several historical sites to visit.

 

Loch Ness, best known for the alleged sightings of "Nessie" the Loch Ness Monster, is also nearby and has an Exhibition Centre as well as Cruises & Tours.

 

Glen Affric National Nature Reserve - Situated 15 miles from our cottages. Glen Affric is widely regarded as the most beautiful glen in Scotland. At its heart is a large loch surrounded by the remnants of the ancient Caledonian forest that once covered vast tracts of the Highlands. Autumn is probably the best time of the year to visit, when you will see a dramatic display of the colours that are the essence of this season.

 

Culloden Battlefield - Where the last land battle fought by British forces on the UK mainland is approximately 30 minutes drive away. This was where the Scottish Jacobite rebels led by Bonnie Prince Charlie were finally crushed ushering in a dark period for many of the highland clans. The new visitor centre has a number of attractions including: an Exhibition where you can listen to accounts from genuine characters who were involved in the Battle of Culloden, a battle immersion theatre - a short 360 degree film that relives the horror of the battle and a Roof-top viewing that allows you to appreciate the true scale of the battle.

 

Dolphin Watching - There are number of locations along the coast of the Moray Firth where you can watch the local dophins. The most popular with our guests, (Chancory Point near Fortrose) is about a 35 minute drive from the cottages.

 

Highland WIldlife Park - Visit the Cairngorms Wildlife Park where you can see the very rare Scottish Wild Cat, Lynx, Wolves and many other endangered animals from around the world. It is about a 45 minute drive from the cottages off the A9.

 

Activities

Hill Climbing/Trekking - Whether you prefer a short leisurely stroll or are looking for a serious challenge trekking through true wilderness, this area is a fantastic place for walking and caters for all abilities. Glen Strathfarrer, Glen Affric and Glen Cannich are all within easy distance; several Munros are right on the doorstep and there are nearby walks along the River Beauly.

 

Fishing - There is excellent fly fishing for both salmon and trout in the local rivers.

 

Loch Ness Cruises - Enjoy a trip down Loch Ness with the option of a stop off at the Urquhart Castle. An excellent way of seeing Loch Ness and visiting this iconic Scottish castle.

 

Pony Trekking - Highland Trekking and Trail Riding is available in the settlement of Cougie, ten miles south of Cannich. Enjoy a trek through stunning highland scenery and observe wildlife such as goldcrests, crossbills and long tailed tits. There are also hens, ducks and rabbits for younger children to feed and a garden with picnic tables where you can wait for riders to return.

 

Eating Out

Both the Cnoc Hotel and the Struy Inn are within walking distance from our cottages. There are also a good selection of restaurants within easy driving distance in Beauly, Inverness and Dingwall. Below are just a few places to try:

 

The Cnoc Hotel is a 20 minute walk away towards Struy and has a formal dining room and bar which is open to non-residents.

 

The Rocpool Restaurant in the centre of Inverness is a vibrant, modern brasserie with an imaginative and tasty European style menu.

 

The Corner on the Square in Beauly is a licensed delicatessen and eaterie in the historic village of Beauly. Open during the day, this bustling cafe is a great place to enjoy a tasty lunch or simply relax with a coffee whilst looking around Beauly. A good selection of food and drink from around the globe can be purchased in the deli store.
